Hi, I'm Eli. I lived and played music in Philadelphia for 19 years, until I moved to Northampton in 2020. Now that I have a studio space for rehearsing and recording, I am starting a jazz fusion metal band. "What does that mean," you ask?
It will combine elements of:
- 60's post-bop (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock) & free jazz (Ornette Coleman)
- 70's jazz fusion (Mahavishnu Orchestra... Miles and Herbie in the 70's)
- modern progressive and technical metal (Meshuggah, Cynic)
I'm looking for high level players with a jazz vocabulary, that can read rhythmically complex charts, and at least an interest in metal and free improvisation.
The first tune I've written for this project is kind of like an extended prog metal riff melody that will be the “head” of the song. Then solos over the form. All with metal intensity and aesthetics. I'm very open to input and ideas from other musicians that are interested and experienced in this kind of playing.
There will be an element of free jazz/improv in at least some tunes, where the form is left aside, and we just vibe for a while to make some crazy moments of spontaneous tension, release, and groove. I decided this band will definitely play Wayne Shorter’s “JuJu,” and I’ll probably pick one Herbie tune and one Miles 2nd Quintet tune.
I’m aiming to have keys, 5 string bass, 7 string guitar, sax, trumpet. I have bass and guitar amps and a PA.
