I've been writing metal music for many years, and it comes naturally to me. I do not read music, but have no issues writing catchy riffs. My philosophy is that if it's not catchy, it's not $#!7. I enjoy writing and have some material recorded for reference. I listen to lots of different sub-genres. Variety is important to me in writing my music.
