ABOUT

Opening for vocalist(s), keyboard, horn(s). Contemporary Funk-Jazz/Upbeat Smooth Jazz band. Imagine the high-energy, dancing, funky end of Nick Colionne, BWB (Braun Whalen Brown), Avenue Blue, Dave Koz, Brian Colbertson, Fatburger, Rippingtons, Spyra Gyra, et. al. If you like the Napa Valley Jazz Getaway, Montreaux Jazz Fest, or the very funky high-energy end of smooth jazz, you know what I mean. We would also take classics (Michael Jackson, R&B, Motown) and rearrange them to make them Contemporary Funk-Jazz/Upbeat Smooth Jazz. Looking to offer this as an option to standard cover bands for festivals, benefits, weddings and corporate events.

This could be the "fun and rewarding" project for pros who want to recharge from their daily grind of playing what is put in front of them as a job, or semi-pros who want to center themselves with other musicians in this genre that is musically interesting and fulfilling.

Requirements: High proficiency on your instrument and a good groovin' nature with contemporary-jazz-funk bias. This will be limited to advanced players. The work ethic, learning curve, song list and expectations will reflect this and may be too challenging for the casual musician.

What we want: Financially stable, solid citizen, have your own transportation, bring your own pro-level gig-appropriate gear and be prepared to play the scheduled songs. Geographic and schedule compatibility to make it to scheduled rehearsals in Reno about 1-2/month.

What we don’t want (not judging and many musicians exercise their right to be such, but it just doesn't work for our mix): Flakes, Primadonnas, drugs, alcohol abuse, passive-aggressive/sarcastic attitudes or egos looking for a backup band. Please don't try to get in with the agenda of shifting the genre. This IS the genre of this group. Those who are offended, please do not apply. Those who are relieved, this may be what you are looking for.

Instruments Welcome:
* Keys with improvisation ability and band bias (solo acts don’t seem to blend well with bands).
* Horns who can improvise and not need scores.
* Vocals - versatile, funky, soulful: Team player that contributes vocals as an equal member with vocals as their instrument. (Sorry, this is not going to become a vocal feature/backup band).
* Guitarist: Team player with opportunities so take lead breaks but have a lead guitar.

Age: No issue but expect 30+.

Goal: Play for fun and pick and choose venues that are fun and rewarding. Likely not (m)any dive bars, pay-your-dues joints , etc. Looking toward festivals, weddings, corporate, private party and benefit gigs.

Region: Reno, Nor-Cal and occasional overnights if the pay and gig is right. Not looking to be a touring group.

If interested, shoot me an email ( dukenishi at g mail dot com ) with interest and background and I’ll send you a starting song list to see if there is compatibility.
Thanks for your interest!
