ABOUT

UPDATE 8/1/2022: Let's collaborate safely, online. I now have a nicer library of backing tracks and have been spending a LOT of time and energy playing with Band In A Box, in many styles and genres. If u need a vocalist who can work from home, let's chat. My allergies and disability prevent me from doing traditional 'gigs,' anymore.

You can find me via Fakebook, just search for me, Charlene Fernandez.

I have sung often as a guest at other people's gigs, open jam sessions, open mics, parties, etc. Have attended many rehearsals and been a part of various "projects" that didn't play out much, due to members moving, etc.

I recently won Larry Dupio's, "Can You Sing the Blues?" Contest at HulaHula's. But I like to sing in MANY genres. I have been singing at Monday Night Jazz Jam about 2x/month on average, for the past 4 years. My book is growing every year.

I have a B.A. in music from the UHH. I can read music. I am very expressive and try to deliver each song in a unique, meaningful way. I connect with the audience easily and am extremely comfortable onstage, thanks to my theatre training. ;-)

My ultimate dream is to be in a group that loves to play CALYPSO /Soca really well, but maybe JAZZ it up a bit...dance numbers in other genres, but also be ok with sitting down and doing standards and/or ballads, too. I have a wide range of genres that I enjoy, from Show Tunes to Country to Funk and beyond. I will be bored in a group who only plays one style or genre.

I desire like-minded musicians, who think outside the box, play a song differently now and then...not exactly like the radio.

I am dedicated to my art, believe that PRACTICE is what you do at home, REHEARSAL is what you do with the group, and PERFORMANCE is what happens when you add the magic of audience. All 3 are necessary. I am getting tired of rehearsals with groups who don't play out, or who won't practice at home, and I am tired of performing with groups who don't rehearse together. A jam session is kind of like all 3, and fun, but it doesn't pay the bills.

I prefer short, focused rehearsals in Hilo. I do have a physical disability that makes it challenging to practice, rehearse, and perform-let alone manage a band on my own. However, I am always trying to make it easier on myself and others, and most people don't even realize that I am disabled, because I hide it so well.

I can HELP co-lead. I believe all members have a voice. I prefer a band that can create cool vocal harmonies together, but I am capable of creating my own harmonies on my own time.

I have NEVER been paid. I will change that. I need MONEY for gas, food, bills, costumes, makeup, etc.

I think it is unfair to expect a vocalist to show up dressed to the nines, sing and dance her ass off for a set, (or 3 sets, sonetimes) then not even give her a SHARE of tips during that set. Especially when the audience is walking up and tipping DURING the performance...but not during the other songs. Attention instrumentalists: the voice with the face in front is pleasing the crowd and earning tips for you...learn to share the tips.

It's time to pay the vocalist. Her car needs gas, too. ;-)

Everyone in my life who has ever sung or played an instrument.

Every choir, ensemble, or production that I have ever been a part of.

Every song I have ever heard, and every artist. (Some people say that I sound like Karen Carpenter or Anne Murray.)

I enjoy all forms of music, from World to Folk to Classical. Bring it. Let's sing it...together.

EQUIPMENT

EV Mic, cable, mic/music stands, Fishman amp, Mackie Mixer with USB, Zoom H4N Pro

Miscellaneous speakers, PA parts, cables. Extra mic stands, etc.

Camera/video gear. My husband, Glenn Fernandez, is beyond technically capable, and records all of my performances. Some rehearsals, too...so I can improve myself. He's also a valuable band member, is encouraging, generous, promotes any group that he likes...and fully expects the vocalist to be paid. ;-)
