ABOUT

I don't drive and I have never had a car. I walk to work. On the way I'll pass by a dozen flyers for all the cover bands playing at the bars downtown. "Find some real work," I say under my breath. I suppose one could say the same to me; I earn my money scrubbing pans and preparing raw shrimp, but it's what I do and I like the people there. I make an honest living like anyone else, and if I get bored, I'll check my messages and like anyone else. There's always a new invite for a show I might go to if I could, or one nearby I'd just as soon not go to after work; I've seen all these bands before. Some of them play mostly original material and this I support fully, but when a guy announces into a mic, "We've got a BRAND-NEW song for you tonight" it's a little hard to get as excited as they want, especially when it turns out they're still hyping up one song they wrote three months earlier - or is it? - and that's when my mind begins to wander back to the afternoon, when it was just me and my keyboard...
Some people like to say there are "so many amazing bands" in the area. While I suppose it's true that there's "so much local talent" it seems "amazing" became the new word for "decent" somewhere along the line and I hate that. Has the world gone so braindead that people can be amazed by cover bands? Or is it just Saratoga?
