OVERNIGHT SUCCESS Does Happen - under the right circumstances. Such as these:
1) Lead Singer is beyond 'singing Dylan:' he 'channels' Dylan. Though sounding almost exactly like Dylan, he is not imitating him. The quality and range of the voice is not as important as its motivation and power.
I know this sounds crazy: but I'm convinced that I've 'tuned in' to the same Energy that Dylan tuned in to when he was at his peak from 1964 through 1967. Both of our minds get 'energized' from this same source, I think (as do many Artists.)
Part of this is that I was raised as an Air Force Brat (like Jim Morrison) in a severely emotionally-abusive childhood. This provided the vital element of 'sanctification:' separation from the ordinary world.
Then I grew up "Experienced" in the Psychedelic Sixties (like Jimi Hendrix.) You know what I'm talking about. A lot of long, strange trips!
And for those of you who understand Astrology, another factor would certainly be my Horoscope: I was born on August 1st (Jerry Garcia's Birthday) with my Moon in Pisces. A very hard, yet powerful, moon position for a Leo. It took me decades to 'find myself' and decipher the boundaries separating a crazy mind from an insane world.
And - like Dylan emerging at the start of the 60's - I am painfully aware of the Horror and Evil in this world today and would like to express my feelings about it through this musical enterprise. (I'm also painfully aware of the Beauty!)
2) Though there are several Dylan Tribute Bands in Europe (where Dylan is much bigger than here); there is only one other Dylan Tribute Band in the USA (based in LA.) This 'competition' - "Highway 61 Revisited"- is very good, but they're more slick & commercial. They are more the 'E' and we are the 'A' in the 'Arts & Entertainment' Network.
D'LAN! is devoted to creating a pure, emotionally-compelling sound and to remaining faithful to the spiritual/political roots of Bob Dylan's music when The Master was at his best (40 years ago!)
But this orientation doesn't have to be incompatible with commercial success (i.e., fame & fortune.) In fact, we aim for and expect financial success! Not necessarily 'Cover of Rolling Stone' - but it's a possibility!?
We will not be ripped off by anyone and will reap what we deserve: which will be pretty good wages for the next 2 or 3 years, at least. There are plans for beyond that but there's no need to go into that at this time.
3) There is the possibility that this band could someday be the authentic 'voice' of Bob Dylan's Legacy - especially when (it has to happen someday!) Bob's Never Ending Tour is over! (If he falls in love with a woman who tells him: it's either me or the constant touring, Bob!)
At least, that is the Vision I'd like to pursue (dream big - otherwise: what's the use of having dreams?)
4) Band's Manager is well-connected in the Seattle Music Biz; is currently working for several booking agencies; and is starting Law School this Fall to become an Entertainment Lawyer. Suffice it to say that she is very serious about the music biz; and is very competent.
5) Band's debut at Folklife Festival Memorial Day, 2008 has already created a 'buzz' in the Seattle Music Scene.
6) European Tour practically guaranteed after debut on June 1, 2008. We will play some local venues until then; but plan to concentrate on Europe; New Zealand; Australia; China; and Japan.
7) Lead Singer is writing his own original 'Dylanesque' songs: one of them to debut at Folklife. The lyrics are finished, and I'm now working on the music. I love 'Zimmy,' obviously, but in this time of the greatest spiritual & political danger in our planet's history: Bob is crooning away and avoiding controversial lyrics, it seems to me. I still love him and his music - don't get me wrong!
But I see a void the New Millenium which is crying out for a 'New Dylan' to fill it. So let's take the best of Bob Dylan during his 'Golden Age' (1965-1979, in my opinion) and proclaim the Truth that is his music and lyrics and bring him into the 21st Century.
In other words: we don't want to get classified as a 'Cover Band.' We will write and perform original songs by myself and anyone else with good, meaningful, topical songs written by band members or others.
Only apply if you are a top quality, Professional Musician who can commit to the band at least until we debut at Folklife. If you can't do the European Tour, then you are welcome to play with us in the Seattle area while we train replacements for Touring.
Superior Musicianship is the prime requirement to join this band: but a person with a friendly, non-egotistical demeanor will get precedence over a musician who might be a notch better but who is missing something in the personality department.
Your musicianship can improve with practice: but we're all stuck with your personality and don't plan to waste time trying to change or mold it! Those with a strong spiritual 'Higher Power' of some kind preferred.
No drug users; alcoholics; or those with severe marital or personal problems need apply. Men/Women; Straight/Gay; Christian/Non-Christian all welcome. Recovering Addicts welcome: but a relapse means immediate dismissal.
Oh . . . did I forget to mention that this band and this music is also all about simply having FUN?! Singing and playing Dylan Songs is plain fun to do if you are a fan especially! And 'Fun' is not just a byproduct of all we're doing. It has to be - and will remain - a central reason for all the time and energy we put into doing this!
The 'fun' won't get lost by touring, fame, or fortune, I can tell you. I'm working with my manager to remove as much of the stress from a successful touring band situation as it is possible to do. Everyone's personal needs and preferences will be taken into consideration as we each chart our individual and communal career.
Bob Dylan, obviously. Of his 800-song repertoire, Lead Singer has picked 50 songs from Dylan's Masterpiece Albums: Bringing It All Back Home; Highway 61 Revisited; Blonde on Blonde; John Wesley Harding; Blood On The Tracks; Slow Train Coming; and a few songs from other albums.
Will perform more later, but these are the initial ones to learn.
Set of CDs available for serious candidates has these songs in the order in which they might be performed in a very long concert. Of course, normally we'd cull some out for most performances.
Singer does all styles of Dylan, and these songs are arranged by genre so that this 'Ideal Concert' starts with Kick-ass Rock ("Pledging My Time" & "On The Road Again" to be precise.) 12 songs/1 hour of Rock followed by 45 minutes of 'Love' Songs. Then 1 hour of Dylan 'Rap' Songs (3); Dylan 'Classic Songs (3); Dylan 'Country Songs (2); and Dylan 'Spiritual' Songs (5). Then 45 minutes for the 'Finale' (4); followed by 1st Encore Songs (3); and 2nd Encore Songs (2).
