ABOUT

Played tons of clubs back in the late 80's and 90's on bass and acoustics, sang lead and backups in a five piece band. After a divorce in 09, got back into music and have been playing more modern rock in clubs. Love to write originals, but understand that you have to play what the people want to hear and dance to, so I am not scared to play any kind of music. Very eclectic and open minded. Love alternate tunings on guitars, especially on acoustics. I am also used to playing with dual lead guitarists, if possible. It just opens up and fills songs the way they are supposed to sound. Of course, a good keyboardist can do the same thing. I've done the power trio thing, but it's been a long time ago, and although I'm good enough to fill in the empty spaces when the guitar goes off on a solo, I would have to get used to it again. It really dictates how you play a bass, on what other instruments are in the band. Another key is being the link between the percussion and the melody (Guitar, keyboard). I played with a country band for a bit a few years ago, and that was fun, too. New update as of March 13, 2017, I'm in a country band now called The Derek Lee Band, and we just released a CD of originals, with me on bass. Not really traditional country, more Texas country with rock leanings. So far, so good.

Influences

Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin, The Who, Aerosmith, Nugent, ZZ, KISS, Eagles, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Sabbath, Floyd, Rush, Cars, Nazareth, Scorpions, Van Halen, MoTown, etc etc.... whatever pretty much. Also, STP, Velvet Revolver, U2, Whitesnake, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, GnR, Weezer, Toadies, Judas Priest, Bowie and The Cure. The list can also swing to Merle, Willie, George, Jerry Reed, Jerry Jeff Walker, Allison Krauss and everything in between and beyond country and rocknroll. Not much into rap, although I would give any musical idea a try. I like music that's fun to play and fun to listen to, no matter what genre it is, but thrive on original stuff more.

EQUIPMENT

Currently have 12 string and 6 string acoustic/electric Takamines, an Alvarez classical guitar, another classical that is electric/acoustic, a Gretsch electric/acoustic Dobro, a Nashville tuned 6 string Yamaha, a 12 string Rickenbacker electric, an Epiphone SG and a Fender Telecaster with a couple of Marshall amps. I have a couple of Fender Jazz Basses, a Fender acoustic/electric bass, a 5 String Ibanez and was playing through a one of a kind tube amp called a Caulby that was hand made by a rocket scientist type guru. I like it, but also have a GK with 4x10, an Ampeg B4R with 8x10 cab, but my new favorite is a Mark Bass rig that rocks the house. I have a very nice Roland FP keyboard, and a Yamaha keyboard, but I'm not much of a keyboard player, they are more an investment for studio and writing originals needing strings, effects or whatever. Unless I can ever find a keyboard player who can use it. I also have a small Kustom PA and mics and stands, but the PA is really for acoustic type gigs only, not full band. Mics and stands, effects, pretty much everything necessary to play in studio or gig on very short notice.
