Stupid Questions v9 Take 2
Stupid Questions v9 Take 2 Genre: Electronic
Performed with dual Roland MC-303 Grooveboxes, Roland Boss DR-3 drum machine, DSI Mopho monophonic synth, Roland SP404A sampler, all driven by a Roland SBX-1 master clock. Approach: I used the first MC-303's eight instruments with internal MC-303 sounds only. Two instruments establish the Tangerine Dream style hypnotic pattern early on, varied with some percussive sounds on the other instruments. Tweaking those sounds with the filter, resonance, and envelope knobs. I used only one "pattern" in the first MC-303. I created that pattern by combining eight of the preset pattern "snippets" in the "E, F, and G-series" of Realtime Phrase Sequences (RPS). At about the 7:00 minute mark, I bring in the second MC-303. On it I took advantage of the "pattern set" option whereby I had a button fingertip control sixteen different "patterns" that I could use. Each of these sixteen patterns has their own set of up to eight instrument "melodies," though typically each pattern had only five or six active. The first eight patterns were set up to use only MC-303 internal instruments. The second eight patterns used a combnation of internal instruments, with *one* channel, channel 4, being dedicated to direct its MIDI messages externally through MIDI OUT to a DSI Mopho monophonic synth. From about the 7:00 mark to 39:34 I played the first eight patterns, maybe four minutes each, layering in the different instruments one or two at a time, and tweaking them with the realtime filter, resonance, and attack/delay envelope. From about 39:35 to 1:19:00 (the end) I played each of the remaining eight patterns, which were copies of the original eight, except directing instrument four out externally as MIDI channel 4 to drive the Mopho. All the patterns were "stock preset" MC-303 patterns, which I copied into the User pattern memory, so I could change some of the instrument tones (can do this only with user patterns, not the preset patterns.) Preset patterns copied to user patterns were: A01, A03, A04, A06, A10, A11, A14, A26, E09, E22, E35, E41, E45, F06, and G30. The Boss DR-3 drum machine was brought in because of its pushbutton variability of three sets of fill & verse drum patterns, and to heavy up on the MC-303 drums as bit.
