ABOUT

-mhoarn at dot com - I've been writing since before I even began school. I started out with short stories and novels and now mostly write music and poetry that later becomes music. I started playing music at age 5 with piano. I took lessons for 6 years until I was 11. I began playing in school band with baritone after piano. After teaching myself to play acoustic guitar starting at 13, I bought my first electric at 17. Taught a friend to play bass guitar in my early twentiea and learned myself at the same time. Fell in love with bass myself through Flea, Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten and reggae music. Since then I have been expanding my musical tastes and learning more and more theory, styles, techniques and much about life in general. I played bass with Bear's Eclectic Honey Band (a small local Minnesota group) in my mid twenties Learned a lot gigging with that group. Through that endevour I met my wife who I'm madly in love with. Unfortunately when I moved to Winona to be with her and raise our kids I was unable to continue my commitment with the group. After that I worked on my writing with a variety of styles ranging from roots, rock, funk, reggae, blues, jazz, alternative metal, and electronica. For a time I worked with a friend I was teaching on a two piece project composed of totally improvised random jams we planned to develop organically. He got into a serious relationship though and moved out of town a while back. A lot of great learning about improvising and teaching though.I am working on some other collaborations to keep my creativity nourished through Wikiloops under the name Matty McP. But I would love to jam live with some local musicians live. Even working on a project and maybe do some local gigging. No matter what instrument, style, etc you play if you live nearby drop me a line if you are interested in just jamming for fun and love of music. I am into pretty much any music style. Lately I have been into bass playing fair bit of that helps :)

Influences

Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Dave Matthews Band, Mike Doughty, Thom Anderson, Sly Stone, Phish, Sublime, Funkadelic, P-Funk, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Victor Wooten, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Steel Pulse, Ziggy Marley, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Living Colour, Fishbone, Primus, Oysterhead, Rage Against the Machine, Temple of the Dog, Chris Cornell, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Incubus, Herbie Hancock, The Headhunters, Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, David Lanz, Juno Reactor, Afro Celtic Soundsystem, System of a Down, Soul Coughing, Osamu Kitajima, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, The Clash Blind Melon, Spyro Gyra, Nawang Khechog, John Patitucci, The Yellowjackets, Chick Corea, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Count Basie, Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Louis Johnson, Larry Graham, Stuart Hamm, a bunch of obscure post punk and looping guys have been inspirational too. My friends from Arizona in the band ICN3D and Dee Dread and the Zion Knights were really awesome to me. ICN3D has a website at ICN3D/. They are truly excellent musicians and their music is all totally improved so it starts out really mysterious and mellow then the drums and bass kick in, a groove gets going and its all very magical. They were inspired by a lot of the great jam bands and I would strongly encourage giving them a good listen. You won't be disappointed. I lived with the synth guitarist in the band for a year or so down in Phoenix. He was like a second father to me in many ways. He also introduced me to Dee Dread, a native of the islands, who is an excellent reggae musician based also out of Phoenix. I wish I knew of a website with his music but I don't. I can say he is one of the wisest and well grounded people you'd ever meet. We always had interesting conversations. Another musician to mention from the scene down there is Slim Golba who's a member of ICN3D and also fronts the Overtones. His views on the just intonation system are nothing short of genius. The best bass player I've ever heard live and a humble, mellow guy despite his amazing talent. One of the only people you'll ever hear that can cover Jaco Pastorius note for note. Definitely a joy to hear, meet and talk with. Victor Wooten's book "The Music Lesson" has been an inspiration as well. I'd recommend it to any musician no matter the instruments played it's about playing Music :)
