Biography
New York based guitarist Nelson Riveros’ debut recording titled “Camino Al Barrio”, is an album of original compositions and three arrangements ranging influences from Contemporary-Jazz, bebop and Latin American rhythms. Camino al Barrio peaked at #8 on the Jazz Week World Music Chart. He was nominated among his peers as ‘Next Best Generation Artist’ and ‘Best Latin Jazz Guitar’ for the 2010 Latin Jazz Corner Best of The Year Awards.
He studied with a very in demand guitar teacher named George Bien who turned him on to recordings by Joe
Pass, Pat Martino, Wes Montgomery, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour and George Benson.
A graduate of City College where he received a BFA in Jazz Studies, Nelson studied guitar with Gene
Bertoncini, Pete McCann and composition with Mike Holober. He also studied at Mannes College of Music with guitarist Vic Juris. Nelson has performed and recorded with Grammy nominated pianist Hector Martignon, Grammy winning bassist John Benitez, Samuel Torres, Luis Bonilla, Jeremy Wall (Spyro Gyra), Alfredo De La Fe, Adela Dalto.
Nelson has performed at the Long Island Winter Fest Jazz on the Vine, Miles Café, Blue Water Grill, FB
Lounge, and Nuyorican Poets Café, Edgewater Music & Arts Festival, Grand Central Partnership Summer Music Series, Van Dyke Cafe in Miami, Bar Next Door. Nelson recently appeared on the Spanish TV channel
UNIVISION’s ‘ACA ENTRE NOS’ music segment talking about his music and influences.
Nelson is an active teacher and has been on the faculty of the 92Y School of Music since 2005 an as a
teaching artist for the 92Y’s Outreach Program.
