Phantom Fifth is an alternative rock band from New York City comprised of Greg Delves (bass) from Melbourne, Australia, Colin McCarthy (drums) of Cork, Ireland and Paul Stinson (guitar, vocals) from San Francisco, California. Formed in 2015, the band embraces the sonic dreamscape of sound and dark energy staked out by such forebears as Nick Cave, Joy Division, The Strokes and The Stooges. The Phantoms' sound is built around dark melodies, shimmering guitars, and propulsive bass lines, with lyrics about wolves, ghosts, murderous paramours, Italian discos, and other manifestations of love and madness.
“As a songwriter I tend to want to invoke a mood, a feeling, a location,” says front man Paul Stinson. “At the same time, I’m basically a punk, so I’m going to want to get in your face once in a while and rock the fu*k out. I think our band perfectly embodies all of that."
Originally from California, where he co-founded the "punk Americana" band The Stripminers with members of X and The Donnas, Stinson moved to Brooklyn in 2014 and quickly met up with power pop guru Delves (of Aussie bands The Inner Sleeves and Radio Luxembourg) and McCarthy (of Amsterdam-based Belsonic Sound). The trio immediately began writing, recording and performing in and around NYC and have plans in the works for tours of both the UK and Australia. The band's debut EP is due out in Summer of 2016.
