Rafael is a classical guitarist, composer, and conductor who has won several awards for his cultural projects, compositions and performances. He has taught at Shenandoah University, the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo and the Conservatorio Nacional de Música of Santo Domingo, and he began teaching at Sweet Briar College in fall 2007. He has organized six guitar festivals in the Dominican Republic and has taught harmony, music appreciation, music analysis, and counterpoint. Being one of the most outstanding guitarists of the Dominican Republic, he has performed throughout his country, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Turkey, the USA, Venezuela, and Canada.

Rafael began his musical studies at the Music Academy "Patria" in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic, and later attended the Conservatorio Nacional de Música of Santo Domingo. He has a BM from Brooklyn College, two MM (music performance and orchestral conducting) and a DMA from Shenandoah University. He has two CD’s: “Sweet Hour of Prayer” and “Herta’s Garden and his website is www.RafaelScarfullery.com.
