ABOUT

Greetings! My Name is Jerry Hurley, though my friends call me JB. I live just outside of Winston-Salem N.C. and I have been performing as a singer since I was able to speak. I regularly performed at Karaoke with my grandparents on the weekends. In middle school I joined band and began to learn sheet music, and via that avenue joined choir and fell in love with ensemble playing. My father brought me up on a healthy diet of classic and modern music, by that I mean everything from classic rock to classical as well as electronic music and pop. I played on Drumline in Highschool, as well as several band ensembles, choir and theatre. I picked up guitar sophomore year, and soon picked up bass as well as polishing my lacking piano skills at the time.
After High school I decided to attend High Point University with a B.A. in Vocal Performance. At university I fell in love with Opera of all things (which felt strange for a kid who either wanted to conduct a choir or sing the blues) and began to really hone in my technique. I found myself a sort of vocal Chameleon with a big range. I did not root myself to the classical world however, quite the contrary! I learned to sing with distortion when playing Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors in high school, and continued to use it just about any time I had the chance. I love swinging my voice around.
University also tightened up my theory knowledge. Up to that point I played everything by ear, outside of choir or percussion. I really fell in love with theory and began applying it to all of the instruments that I had collected up to that point. I am a bit obsessed with learning new things, which is why I play so many instruments, but I stand firm that my voice is my forte. Regarding school, I am finishing my senior year currently and graduating in the spring of 2022, from there I plan to attend graduate school to continue my operatic endeavors, and continue to hone my voice, though nothing is set in stone as of now.
I have a few beliefs when it comes to conducting myself in the professional music world. 1: Early is on time, on time is late. 2: Music is learnt before rehearsal, not at rehearsal. 3: Don't pull from one source, use your whole tool kit.
That last one needs a bit of explaining. I love music theory but I also love learning songs by ear, and I try to use them both in tandem at the same time. The same thing applies to the general feel a song has which pushes a musicians soul in one way or another. My point is you can ask me to sing off the page or on it, it makes absolutely no difference to me.
My shortcomings are as follows. While I am proud of what I can do instrumental wise, I am still very much a student. I can improvise a lead guitar solo fairly well but my phrasing is still being workshopped as is my scale knowledge. I know the major modes, and the pentatonic (of course), but the more advanced scales are just now getting under my fingers. If a piece is on the page, I will need a good amount of practice time to get it down, I am not a strong sight reader. The same goes for many of the other instruments I practice on a daily basis.
I am looking mainly to build contacts with other local musicians in my area, but if the sound is right I am willing to join a band. If you have read this far into my little bio, then thank you! Sorry for the length, but I have a lot to say.
If you would like you contact me, feel free to shoot me an email at JerryB.Hurleyoutlook Also feel free to check out my be Channel. s://./channel/UC9vV5ZCVXCAvvRTfbyB2DiQ/featured
It only has one Demo and a couple of cringy vlogs from choir tour. Hey buddy, its my humor!
Cheers!
