I'm a singer/songwriter and guitarist/bassist whose been playing for just over 10 years. I'm 27 years old and have a wife and two kids (one of which will not be born till October.) I've written over 200 songs and have recorded over 50. I have a degree in digital media which means I can do professional audio and video production, producing engineering, etc.
I've played in several bands, and the most successful was a band called Red Cord. We were together for 4 years and played all over Michigan and sometimes out of state. We recorded three albums, sold tons of shirts, and were the local favorite band for any type of Christian event. That band broke up years ago, and my music has evolved very much since then. I no longer feel the need to "preach" in my music or write praise and worship music. I write from the Christian perspective, and sometimes it's obvious, but most of the time it's not – and it's never pushy cliché' Christianese crap. I've recorded three additional albums of my own solo material (but with a whole band.)
My influences are the Beatles, CAKE, Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Ben Folds Five and others. I recently got back with the keyboardist from Red Cord (Dan Wait) and we've been jamming on a weekly basis with the possibility of forming a new band. This potential band will practice once a week and hopefully gig about once a month for $200 to $1000 per gig. Dan and I both have good day jobs (I work at www.acousticsbydesign.com doing marketing and business development) and we both have families, so we no longer want to "rule the music world" so to speak – in other words, we want to play for real and get gigs for real, but not for a full time career.
We're looking for a drummer and bass player who can understand our musical styles, play with great grove as opposed to stellar chops, and here's the most important part: we're looking for someone(s) with the same type of aspirations. IE: If you wanna practice three nights a week and eventually go full time, then we're not your guys. We both have the skills to "make it" in the industry if we wanted to, but both have decided that family is more important and that going full time would be far too great a sacrifice. We want to practice, gig, and record – and make money doing it – but we know our boundaries.
If this stringent description hasn't scared you away, email back with your life history and aspirations as well. Muchos gracias. email thomasrthelen-AT-gmail (this site doesn't allow me to put the @ sign in my email or include the ".com" but you know the drill)
