ABOUT

What? Tall cis-het dad rocker? Me? Average White Guy? Yes. My life has been an utter sh*tshow for the last few decades. I’d like to play with people but my time and life are pretty much not helpful at ALL at this time. I dabble with the notion of finding people to play with, but so far that hasn’t worked out.

Influences

Oh, boy. Here we go. Grew up with some hippy kids that were into really loud music, so yes many of my earliest memories are of my stepdad cranking the Silvertone 1484. <Name all the classic rock bands here.> In the early 80s as I grew up I became enamored of: Devo, Elvis Costello, the Pretenders, Dire Straits, Talking Heads, other 80s pop/rock things. Then came Jr High! OMG. Dead Kennedys, Big Black, Tesco Vee and the Meatmen, Suicidal Tendencies, (early) Metallica, Iron Maiden and yes, lots of new wave from the radio, and also Teletunes: Howard Jones, Duran Duran, Police, RHCP, REM, U2, Van Halen, Rhoads/Osborne, man I don't know. In HS it was all LedZep and Metallica, Devo, Talking Heads, Living Color. In 1990 all of the cassettes in my car were Metallica, RHCP, and Living Color; that was after my big Satriani phase, but I haven't listened to him since then. Like, ever. By 1991 they were all replaced by Primus, Tad, Fugazi, Nirvana (Bleach, please!), Faith No More, Butthole Surfers, et al. In 1992 I probably heard Phish and Bela Fleck for the first time (from the same guy, after band practice!), mind blown. [I am not now nor have I ever been a Deadhead, but I can handle a few of their tunes in a set, if I have to. I guess.] At some point a good friend educated me about Coltrane, Miles, and many, many other jazz artists that I used to be able to identify by ear on KUVO, not so much anymore. In addition to all the rock stuff, I grew up on and later bought my own Leo Kottke records; have learned (and forgotten) a number of those pieces. Also a big fan of his duo work with Mike Gordon. (I realize this is quite a list but we're really only into the 90s.) I'll skip to the biggest from the last ten or more years: STEREOLAB! They're coming to Denver in September! I have tickets! Woot!

If I had to narrow it down to an "All-time Top 3" based on # of hours listened, it would easily be Phish, Primus, and Stereolab.

EQUIPMENT

Almost exclusively electrics, and generally a Fender nut. Many of my electrics are actually "partscasters" that I've put together from parts of varying quality levels (as budget allowed), many mutations Fender never tried until it became fashionable for them to do so. I have enough amps but I also make my own tube amps. From very small to very large.
