ABOUT

Looking to start a power trio that plays originals for fun. If anybody else likes them, great, if not, also great.

I uploaded a Pic of the Longhorn I used while recording in a studio in Belgium this February. Not my favorite, but it was signed by all four members of the Golden Earring (think Radar Love). Since I was travelling all over Europe (Business + Pleasure) I could not take my Blackstar with me (regretfully). I also used a Squire P-bass during those recording sessions and am planning to re-record the bass-lines using my Blackstar and exchanging files using CuBase.

Starting out with playing music as a kid (the usual, recorder, piano, choir) there were two major moments of change during my formative years. The first was the discovery of a hand built short scale bass at my Grandmother?s. The second was the arrival of the Album 2112 and the subsequent Gig Rush played at Pinkpop. My life changed significantly after both events.

Music began to play a larger role in my life. Many bands came and went. The local youth choir needed to be accompanied by modern instruments and I added piano and bass to the mix.
Then there were the times that we used piano and drums to cheer up a wedding. At least I seem to remember that it was a wedding, but it could also have been another festive occasion.

Early influences ranged from The Who, Shocking Blue (my first 33-1/3 vinyl), to Kayak and Rush. After a trip to Canada and meeting a distant relative of approximately my age, Chilliwack and April Wine were added.

After trying many bands in all sorts of styles one was started up that stuck longer and had better success: Cube. A six-piece band that mainly played originals. I had already done my share of originals by myself (piano) and with others (acoustic guitar + vocals) and Cube was a perfect extension of that. A lot of time was spent on composing, polishing and arranging the songs. Every practice session was taped and listened to and improved on the way home from our practice "barn" 45 minutes away from where we lived. Practice was on Monday and Friday evenings and only weddings and funerals were allowed to interfere (so to speak). This culminated in a tour through Belgium (I drove the equipment truck), a day in the VARA studio, and national airplay in a popular radio show. We also started discussing options with Freddie Haaijen, at that time the manager of the Golden Earring.

Many bands implode or explode after they become famous. We were far ahead of them in those matters. We did it before we became famous.
After this episode I joined a few other bands, but matters were not helped by the fact that I moved back-and-forth between The Netherlands and the US a few times, got married, and later started changing diapers.

So, there was a whole lot of nothing for over a decade, until my son mentioned that the Dad of one of his friends played guitar and might be interested in starting a band. He knew a colleague who liked hitting the drums and OMRB was started.

I'd still like to get back into playing originals though, since in addition to just playing piano or bass, working with a few musicians on originals really gets me going.

November 2012 update: time to start recording again. Exchanging Cubase files with some of the Cube members in Europe.

EQUIPMENT

1978 Rickenbacker 4001, 1989 Rickenbacker 4003SPC Blackstar, 1980-ish Eko Acoustic Fretlles. Peavey The Bass Mark IV head, Roland Cube 60 Keyboard Combo, and various Cabs to go with them (18", 15", 12". First owner of all of them. And, of course, the SADEM my brother and I built when we were 14-15 years old ];-))))). During my moves back-and-forth between Europe and the US in the early 90s I offloaded about 7 other ones, including a Jazz version of a double base (with a cutout). I loved that one, metal strings, a pickup, and glitter all over ];-)))
