ABOUT

I play guitar and I sing.

I’ve been advertising here and on looking on Craigslist for over a year, meeting musicians, and I’ve learned that I’m looking for two different things.

First, I would love to have a trio - guitar, bass, drums. I think that’s where most music I’m interested in starts - well written songs played by people who listen to one another obsessively in service of the song.

A lot those songs are songbook jazz - the songs that Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday used to sing and that Diana Krall and John Pizzarelli sing now. Some of those are more recent song by great writers, like Elvis Costello and The Beatles and Randy Newman, when he’s behaving well. And a few of them are mine.

But the point is to be versatile and tasty, the kind of ensemble that could play a club or a corporate party and be in the background, on be in concert and worth paying that kind of attention to, the kind of band that could add a horn or violin or singer without losing their identity, and who function perfectly well and happily without one.

That’s one thing.

The other thing is players who just stretch, who are looking to go places they have not gone before, the kind of free jazz that people play if still want a harmonic center… some of the time anyway.

That's what I'm interested in. What are you interested in?
