San Francisco Musicians
The Haight-Ashbury District is a major part of the San Francisco music scene. Bands and musicians like Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin lived in this district. During the 1960’s, Haight-Ashbury was known for its psychedelic rock performers also known as the San Francisco Sound. Other popular bands that exploded from this music scene were Big Brother & the Holding Company, Steve Miller Band, and Santana.
The Fillmore is a very popular music venue where the San Francisco Sound and its musicians gained fame. Before Fillmore became the rock music mogul that it is today, it was a devoted to jazz. Entertainers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday played at Fillmore Street Jazz Clubs. The Fillmore Jazz Festival is an annual event that draws a crowd of more than 90,000 music lovers. The festival offers jazz music, San Francisco culture and cuisine all located on Fillmore Street.
San Francisco is home to many opera houses and symphonies such as the War Memorial Opera House, the San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Symphony.
The Boom Boom Room pays tribute to the 1950s Fillmore clubs playing everything from the blues, boogie, soul, and funk. The House of Shields is another popular night club that offers the look of the 1920s with the sound of local musicians and DJs. Slim’s offers its guests Blues, R&B, Cajun, Jazz, and Alternative music. Slim’s also offers meals with priority seating to all of its shows.
