Detroit Musicians

Detroit’s live music scene has been a dominant feature since the late 1940s. The STE Energy Music Theatre and The Palace of Auburn Hills, two of the nation’s largest live music venues, are located in this metropolis. Detroit is also home to Motown Records founded by Berry Gordon, Jr. Motown Records also signed stars like Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Diana Ross & The Supreme, and Marvin Gaye in the late 60s and 70s.

Detroit is also known for its rock music, often referred to as “Detroit Rock City”, a name coined by the rock group, Kiss. Some other popular rockers from Detroit include Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent, and Bob Seger. Today, stars like Eminem, Kid Rock, and D12 claim Detroit as the place where they got their start. Detroit is also the birthplace of Madonna and hometown to Aaliyah.

Music festivals are large part of the Detroit music scene. The Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival, the Detroit Music Festival, the Motor City Music Conference, the Urban Organic Music Conference, the Concert of Color, and the Hip-Hop Summer Jamz Festival are just a few of Detroit’s musical events.

Silky’s Martini & Music Café is popular spot to chill and enjoy live R&B and jazz music. The 2500 Club is loud punk rock venue featuring creative local talent who play everything from 50s rockabilly to today’s hardcore rock. Harpo’s Concert Theatre is another heavy metal venue alive with the sounds of the 80s rock bands and Detroit Heavy Metal. Harpo’s features popular national acts as well as local talents.
