Seattle Music Scene
Seattle is primarily thought of as the home of grunge music which became popular in the 1990s. Artists like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains are all Seattle born bands. Although grunge music is one of the most notable types of music that arose from this area, Seattle offers many types of music. Sub Pop, the grunge record label founded by Bruce Pavitt and Jon Poneman helped to spur the grunge rock movement. Sub Pop signed bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney. Jazz, rap, and symphony music are all extremely popular in the Northwest. Kenny G., Bill Frisell, and Wayne Horvitz are all notable musicians from Seattle.
Seattle’s Ballard district is a popular area filled with clubs, shops, restaurants, boutiques and pubs. Sonic Boom Records is record store offering more than six listening stations allowing you to sample its selection of new and used records. The Guitar Emporium carries a wide variety of high quality string instruments constructed by many local craftsmen.
The Crocodile Café offers an eclectic live music scene that sprung up in the 90s during the grunge music era. The Croc hosts local alternative bands even before they make it big. R.E.M’s Peter Buck is co-owner of the Croc. Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley is one of the best places to see the best local live jazz musicians. This jazz club attracts everyone from young adults to suburban families.
